PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

CI511-ETHCAT combines mixed I/O with electronic cam control

ABB CI511-ETHCAT is an EtherCAT remote I/O interface combining eight digital inputs, eight transistor outputs, four analog inputs and two analog outputs. Its mixed-signal arrangement supports field measurements and commands alongside the documented electronic cam-switch functions.

Order 1SAP220900R0001 identifies CI511-ETHCAT. Device index C0 and above supports S500 expansion and extended cam functions; earlier hardware must not be assumed to provide those capabilities. Preserve the installed EtherCAT configuration, analog ranges and cam assignments when selecting a replacement.
ACTUAL APPLICATIONS

Where CI511-ETHCAT connects motion events and field signals

ABB describes sheet-metal cutting and rotary-table assembly as decentralized cam-switch tasks. Its module instructions also define mixed analog measurement and command circuits.
  • 01 · CUT TRIGGERING

Relate cutting events to material position

Use the documented electronic cam-switch principle to trigger events as sheet metal moves through a cutting machine. Set the relevant switching positions and timing in the engineered control system, then validate the complete motion and output sequence.
  • 02 · ROTARY ASSEMBLY

Coordinate actions around an indexed table

ABB describes assembly operations in which cams become active according to rotary-table position. Assign the intended digital outputs to the configured tracks and check their angle relationship so each station acts at the required point in the sequence.
  • 03 · MIXED-SIGNAL CONTROL

Acquire sensor values and issue analog commands

Connect compatible analog sensors and receivers through the documented CI511 circuits. Choose input and output ranges separately, preserve their correct reference potentials and verify both measured feedback and commanded values before releasing the EtherCAT station.

ETHERCAT MIXED I/O AND CAMS

Match device index, signal circuits and synchronization

ABB CI511-ETHCAT is an EtherCAT remote I/O interface combining eight digital inputs, eight transistor outputs, four analog inputs and two analog outputs. Its mixed-signal arrangement supports field measurements and commands alongside the documented electronic cam-switch functions.
Use TU507-ETH or TU508-ETH. The analog input bank, analog output bank and fixed digital channels occupy different terminal groups. Select each analog mode in software and follow its documented return connection.
Record the device index before selecting the device description or planning S500 expansion. Index C0 and above supports the documented additional modules and extended cam functions. Check cam mappings and distributed-clock failure behavior against the validated machine design.

Features:

  • Match CI511-ETHCAT to order 1SAP220900R0001
  • Preserve signal ranges and cam assignments
  • Check hardware index before using expansion functions
The ABB CI511-ETHCAT requires device-index compatibility, analog circuit checks and validated cam behavior before system integration and commissioning.
INTERCHANGEABILITY

Verify the complete replacement identity before commissioning

ABB lists CI511-ETHCAT order 1SAP220900R0001 as Active in datasheet 3ADR010007 revision 14 dated 2025-11-28. Confirm the actual device index: support for S500 expansion and extended cam functions is not identical across all hardware.
Capture the existing EtherCAT project, device description, analog ranges, output assignments and cam parameters before exchange. Retain the terminal-unit arrangement and verify supply, signal reference and receiver requirements.
Switch off all supply and process voltages before replacing the module. After restoration, test field measurements, output commands, cam timing and synchronization-loss behavior with the equipment in a safe condition before service.

Features:

  • Check device index against the intended functionality
  • Preserve the EtherCAT project and cam settings
  • Verify measurements and motion-related output behavior
The ABB CI511-ETHCAT requires replacement verification of its hardware index, mixed-signal connections and programmed cam behavior before commissioning.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions buyers ask about CI511-ETHCAT

Direct answers about identity, compatibility, stock, warranty, payment and shipping.
  • Does increasing the active cam count leave the cam interrupt period unchanged?

No. ABB specifies 80 microseconds for 1-8 cams, 100 microseconds for 9-16 and 200 microseconds for 17-32. Reassess the required switching precision when more tracks are used; these are cam interrupt periods, not a complete network-cycle guarantee.
  • Is zeroShift expressed in the angle units selected by the resolution parameter?

No. ABB defines zeroShift in encoder increments, independently of the cam resolution setting. Convert the required mechanical offset using the actual encoder configuration rather than copying the track-angle value directly.
  • Will loss of distributed-clock information always force safe-operational state?

No. ABB documents parameter-dependent behavior: settings in the 0-32 range change state, whereas the documented higher settings can retain operational state and use interpolated timing for cams. Validate the selected failure behavior; EtherCAT state names do not establish a certified safety function.
  • How can a configured cam track be left without a physical output assignment?

Set its camToTrack entry to FFh, which ABB defines as no digital output assigned. Values 0-7 select the corresponding output. Verify every mapping and the resulting machine behavior before enabling automatic motion.
  • May two analog current inputs be placed in series to read the same loop?

No. ABB prohibits series connection of these current inputs, including connections with channels of other modules, because they share a reference potential. Use an engineered signal-distribution arrangement suitable for the actual loop instead.
  • Can the AI- terminal serve as the return for every analog measuring mode?

No. The datasheet assigns AI- at terminal 1.4 to voltage and RTD measurement. Current measurement uses ZP at terminals 1.9, 2.9 or 3.9. Follow the selected circuit and sensor grounding requirements rather than treating all negative terminals as interchangeable.
  • Why may an analog output still be settling after a 1 ms conversion cycle?

The conversion cycle and output settling time are different specifications. ABB gives a typical 5 ms settling time for a full-range analog-output change into a resistive load, so the 1 ms conversion figure alone does not establish receiver response.
  • Should an unused analog output be fitted with a terminating load?

ABB permits an analog output configured as unused to remain open-circuited. Keep that software setting and verify the terminal assignment before leaving the connection unused; do not apply this instruction to a channel that must drive a real receiver.
