PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

AI531 acquires mixed sensor signals in one I/O module

ABB AI531 acquires eight individually configured input signals in an AC500 S500 I/O station. It supports voltage, current, resistance temperature detectors and thermocouples, with 16-bit conversion including the sign bit.

The standard AI531 is ordered as 1SAP250600R0001. Select each channel range and interference filter for the connected sensor, and distinguish module-wise isolation from isolation between individual channels. ABB lists this version as Active in its November 2025 datasheet.
ACTUAL APPLICATIONS

Where AI531 acquires different sensor measurements

ABB documents distinct RTD, thermocouple and current-source connection circuits. Each task requires its own input configuration and appropriate field wiring.
  • 01 · RTD MEASUREMENT

    Acquire resistance-based temperature signals

Connect supported Pt100, Pt1000, Ni1000 or Cu50 sensors using the appropriate ABB wiring circuit. Select the matching RTD configuration and account for the specified two-, three- or four-wire connection when evaluating the temperature signal.
  • 02 · THERMOCOUPLE INPUT

    Read thermoelectric temperature signals

Use a documented J, K, N, S or T thermocouple circuit and the corresponding AI531 input configuration. Check sensor connections and interference filtering so the selected temperature acquisition path matches the actual field sensor.
  • 03 · CURRENT-LOOP INPUT

    Collect signals from process transmitters

Connect active or passive current sources through the documented ABB input circuit. Select the required current range, provide the applicable loop supply and check the measured value against the transmitter output before releasing the loop for operation.

AC500 / S500 SIGNAL ACQUISITION

Match sensor wiring, terminal units and input settings

ABB AI531 acquires eight individually configured input signals in an AC500 S500 I/O station. It supports voltage, current, resistance temperature detectors and thermocouples, with 16-bit conversion including the sign bit.
ABB documents AI531 on TU515 or TU516 terminal units. The eight inputs share a module-wise isolation boundary; analog sensors and their supply arrangements must follow the selected circuit, not a generic terminal diagram.
Record each channel range, RTD or thermocouple type, filter setting and field connection before installation. The standard version needs 24 V DC process power and remains limited to 40 degrees C in vertical mounting.

Features:

  • Use standard order 1SAP250600R0001
  • Select the actual sensor circuit per channel
  • Verify TU515/TU516 and process power
The ABB AI531 requires the sensor type, wiring, terminal unit and channel configuration to be checked before system integration and commissioning.
INTERCHANGEABILITY

Verify the complete replacement identity before commissioning

ABB lists standard AI531 as Active in datasheet 3ADR010030 revision 14, dated 2025-11-28. This lifecycle entry does not establish a universal replacement for another analog module or for the separately coded AI531-XC.
Before exchange, record the full order number, terminal-unit type, channel assignments, input ranges, filter settings and sensor reference connections. Preserve the installation orientation and its ambient-temperature limit.
Plan an isolated replacement unless every ABB hot-swap condition is satisfied. After fitting the correct module, restore the engineered channel settings, verify plausible sensor readings and investigate channel diagnostics before returning the process to service.

Features:

  • Distinguish standard AI531 from AI531-XC
  • Retain sensor assignments and input parameters
  • Check readings and diagnostics after replacement
The ABB AI531 requires replacement verification of its order identity, field wiring, terminal-unit arrangement and input configuration before commissioning.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions buyers ask about AI531

Direct answers about identity, compatibility, stock, warranty, payment and shipping.
  • Why does enabling mains-frequency rejection slow down AI531 conversion?

The ABB timing changes from 1 ms per channel with no suppression to 100 ms per channel with 50 Hz or 60 Hz suppression. Choose the setting for the interference environment and required response; these values are channel conversion times, not a guaranteed complete control-loop cycle.
  • Could wire-break monitoring bias a high-impedance voltage source?

Yes. ABB identifies an approximately 3 microampere wire-break detection current flowing out of the input. Source and cable resistance can turn that current into an additional voltage drop and a higher indicated value. Include this effect when assessing low-level or high-impedance measurements.
  • Does module-wise isolation separate all eight sensor channels?

No. ABB groups the eight inputs together and specifies isolation against the internal supply and other modules. Do not assume channel-to-channel isolation; observe the documented common-mode range and sensor grounding arrangement.
  • Should unused current inputs be bridged like unused voltage channels?

No. The datasheet permits unused current inputs to remain open-circuited. Unused voltage inputs should be configured as unused. Follow the selected input mode instead of applying a common bridging rule to every terminal.
  • Can an AI531 input distinguish a 9 V signal as a valid digital state?

No defined digital state is guaranteed at 9 V. In digital-input mode, ABB specifies signal 0 from -30 to +5 V and signal 1 from +13 to +30 V; the intervening range is undefined. The typical digital-input delay is 2 ms.
  • What happens when a current signal exceeds its measuring range?

Above the overflow limit, the input changes to high impedance for protection and reports overflow. It periodically restores normal impedance to measure again; normal operation resumes when the current is within range. ABB specifies 30 V as the allowed overload voltage in this condition.
  • Will raising a vertically installed AI531 to 55 degrees C remain within its rating?

No. The standard version is limited to 40 degrees C when mounted vertically, versus 60 degrees C horizontally. Preserve natural convection around the module and do not apply the extended-temperature XC rating to standard AI531.
  • Which identity should a distributor match when sourcing standard AI531?

Match AI531 to ABB order number 1SAP250600R0001. AI531-XC is separately listed as 1SAP450600R0001. Confirm the intended standard or XC version and the TU515/TU516 terminal-unit arrangement; a similar product name alone is not a replacement check.
