ABB CI501-PNIO is a PROFINET IO RT device combining four analog inputs, two analog outputs, eight digital inputs and eight digital outputs. It connects a decentralized S500 station to the engineered PROFINET controller through the terminal unit Ethernet ports.

Use the PROFINET IO RT device to connect local analog sensors, digital status signals and controlled loads to the station controller. Select the actual channel modes, verify UP and UP3 supplies and configure the exact S500 expansion sequence. -

Allocate dedicated high-speed counter signals

ABB specifies TU507-ETH or TU508-ETH as the terminal unit. UP supplies the interface and field circuits, while UP3 feeds the digital outputs. The Ethernet isolation boundary must not be interpreted as individual isolation between every I/O channel.

Does CI501-PNIO run the machine program without a PROFINET controller?
It is documented as a PROFINET IO RT device for a decentralized I/O station, not as the station controller. The engineering design must provide the appropriate controller and I/O configuration; Ethernet connectivity alone does not turn this interface into a standalone PLC. -
Why can the station communicate while its digital outputs have no field supply?
Digital outputs use the separate UP3 supply at terminal 3.8. Check that supply and its protection as well as the UP supply at 1.8 and 2.8; a working network connection does not establish that output power is present. -
Are DI0 and DI1 still free for ordinary signals when the fast counter is assigned?
