PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

CI521-MODTCP connects mixed field signals over Modbus TCP

ABB CI521-MODTCP combines analog acquisition, analog commands and discrete field signals in a Modbus TCP remote I/O station. Four analog inputs and two analog outputs accompany eight digital inputs and eight transistor outputs, supporting mixed-signal equipment through one interface.

Order number 1SAP222100R0001 identifies the standard CI521-MODTCP. Match the sensor ranges, output loads, terminal unit and register configuration to the installation. ABB lists this version as Active in datasheet 3ADR010003 revision 14; the separately ordered XC version has different environmental conditions.
ACTUAL APPLICATIONS

Where CI521-MODTCP connects mixed process signals

ABB documents resistance-temperature inputs, current-source connections and analog output loads. Select the circuit and parameters for each real field task.
  • 01 · TEMPERATURE INPUT

    Read resistance-based temperature sensors

Acquire supported Pt100, Pt1000 or Ni1000 signals through the documented ABB sensor connection. Select the matching input mode and wiring arrangement, then check the indicated temperature against a known reference while allowing for the slower RTD conversion cycle.
  • 02 · TRANSMITTER INPUT

    Collect current-loop measurements

Receive active or passive current-source signals using the appropriate ABB input circuit. Provide the correct loop supply and signal return, select the measuring range and validate the acquired value against the transmitter before enabling the associated control action.
  • 03 · ANALOG COMMANDS

    Command compatible analog receivers

Connect voltage- or current-controlled loads to the corresponding analog output circuit. Match the selected range and receiver impedance, then test the commanded endpoints and actual field response so the electrical command agrees with the intended equipment behavior.

MODBUS MIXED-SIGNAL STATION

Match sensor modes, output circuits and register mapping

ABB CI521-MODTCP combines analog acquisition, analog commands and discrete field signals in a Modbus TCP remote I/O station. Four analog inputs and two analog outputs accompany eight digital inputs and eight transistor outputs, supporting mixed-signal equipment through one interface.
CI521-MODTCP uses a TU507-ETH or TU508-ETH terminal unit. Its analog and digital banks have different connection requirements; preserve the correct signal reference for every configured mode.
Configure the IP address, process-image mapping and allowed write clients in the engineered system. Test the timeout response and retain the exact expansion-module order with the controller project.

Features:

  • Identify order 1SAP222100R0001
  • Confirm analog modes and receiver circuits
  • Record register addresses and write supervision
The ABB CI521-MODTCP requires a verified mixed-signal circuit and Modbus configuration before system integration and commissioning.
INTERCHANGEABILITY

Verify the complete replacement identity before commissioning

ABB lists standard CI521-MODTCP order 1SAP222100R0001 as Active in revision 14 dated 2025-11-28. Confirm the installed standard or XC identity instead of assuming the environmental variants are interchangeable.
Preserve the module parameters, IP settings, expansion order, register map and approved write-client list. Check older expansion-module firmware where independent power-up timing is involved.
Isolate the interface before replacement. After restoring its settings, compare measured inputs and commanded outputs with the field equipment, then test the configured bus-failure response before returning to service.

Features:

  • Match standard model and complete order number
  • Retain register map and channel configuration
  • Validate process response after exchange
The ABB CI521-MODTCP requires replacement verification of its mixed-signal wiring, Modbus mapping and fault behavior before commissioning.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions buyers ask about CI521-MODTCP

Direct answers about identity, compatibility, stock, warranty, payment and shipping.
  • Why can Modbus polling remain active while the output watchdog expires?

The timeout supervises write telegrams, starting after the first write. Reading registers alone does not refresh it; keep the configured write cycle within the timeout.
  • How can a maintenance client read values without permission to change outputs?

Configure the permitted Master IP entries. Once at least one writer is specified, only listed clients may write; other clients retain read access. This is not a replacement for network security controls.
  • What is the purpose of the dummy output register?

ABB provides it to retrigger bus supervision without changing physical outputs. Use the documented register and function code for the selected mapping; it is not an additional wired output.
  • Must every data type be byte-swapped for a big-endian controller?

No. ABB requires BYTE and DWORD data to be swapped when interfacing with a big-endian controller, but not analog values. Follow the published process structure instead of swapping the entire image uniformly.
  • Why does an unwired analog terminal indicate a high value?

ABB uses a high-resistance pull-up for open-circuit detection, so an unconnected analog input can read maximum voltage. Check wiring and channel configuration before treating it as a process excursion.
  • Can older expansion modules power up later than the interface?

ABB requires attached expansion modules with firmware 1.9 or earlier to power up together with CI52x. Check the hardware index against ABB's compatibility table before using separate power-up timing.
  • Will inserting a module preserve downstream addresses with dynamic mapping?

Not necessarily. Dynamic mapping follows the actual configuration, so downstream addresses depend on preceding I/O sizes. Read the device information registers and update the controller mapping after configuration changes.
  • Is a 1 ms analog cycle maintained when a resistance thermometer is selected?

No. ABB lists a 1 ms cycle for the four inputs and two outputs, but 1 s with Pt/Ni resistance-temperature measurement. Account for the selected mode in the required measurement response.
