The 1746-NI8 performs analog signal conversion using 16-bit resolution, providing precise acquisition of process variables. Configuration parameters for each channel are stored within the SLC 500 processor and downloaded automatically during system initialization. The 1746-NI8 module contains diagnostic features that can help youidentify the source of problems that may occur during power-up orduring normal channel operation. These power-up and channeldiagnostics are explained in chapter 7, Module Diagnostics andTroubleshooting.The module communicates to the SLC 500 processor through theparallel backplane interface and receives power from the SLC 500power supply through the backplane. The +5V dc backplane supplypowers the SLC circuitry, and the +24V dc backplane supply powersthe module analog circuitry. No external power supply is required.You may install as many 1746-NI8 analog modules in your system asthe power supply can support.Each channel on the module can receive input signals from voltageor current analog input devices. You configure each channelindividually to accept either a voltage or current input signal.

When a channel is enabled (bit 11 = 1), a diagnostic check isperformed to see that the channel has been properly configured. Inaddition the channel is tested on every scan for configuration errors,over-range, under-range, and, for the 4–20 mA input type,open-circuit conditions.
A failure of any channel diagnostic test causes the faulted channelstatus LED to blink. All channel faults are indicated in bits 12–15 ofthe channel’s status word. Channel faults are self-clearing. Whenthe fault conditions are corrected, the channel status LED will stopblinking and resume steady illumination.
