A plant may need a supported DeltaV software and cybersecurity foundation while still having serviceable S-series Traditional I/O, intact field wiring and proven control loops.
Emerson released DeltaV version 16.LTS as a long-term support release with software-defined control options, expanded data and I/O connectivity, enhanced operator applications and secure-by-design features. For existing sites, that creates an important planning question: should the entire installed system be replaced, or can the platform be upgraded while selected S-series Traditional I/O remains in operation?
The answer should come from an installed-base assessment. Card condition, terminal blocks, redundancy, spare availability, controller architecture, operating-system support, application dependencies and turnaround windows all affect the scope. A platform upgrade does not automatically make every traditional I/O card unusable. Equally, a working I/O subsystem should not be treated as proof that the wider control platform can remain unchanged indefinitely.
A current platform can improve lifecycle planning and reduce reliance on unsupported operating-system infrastructure.
The DeltaV IQ Controller adds a server-based control option alongside purpose-built industrial controllers.
PK Controller enhancements include native industrial protocols, with PROFINET and Ethernet-APL support highlighted by Emerson.
Version 16.LTS maintains ISASecure SSA Level 1 certification and extends integrated patch-management options.
Historian and Edge Environment capabilities help make contextualized operational data available beyond the control room.
Modular architecture and licensing choices allow modernization scope to be aligned with site priorities and funding.
Important: These product-family capabilities do not confirm that every installed card, controller or system revision is compatible with a proposed version 16.LTS architecture. Verify the exact model, revision, firmware, redundancy arrangement and supported upgrade path.

Record version, servers, controllers, I/O cards, terminal blocks, firmware and loop criticality.
Distinguish software support exposure from hardware condition and spare-parts exposure.
Confirm supported architecture, backups, test environment, rollback plan and exact compatibility.
Modernize in controlled phases aligned with production and turnaround windows.

For many brownfield sites, the strongest plan may be a hybrid: move the DeltaV platform toward version 16.LTS, supported infrastructure and stronger security practices while retaining S-series Traditional I/O that remains healthy, supportable and appropriate for the application. This can reduce unnecessary rewiring and commissioning work while creating a controlled route to later I/O renewal.
Maintenance remains valid only when it is active and documented. Plants should hold verified critical spares, monitor failure trends, preserve configuration and recovery records, and define measurable triggers for replacement. If spares disappear, failure rates rise, expansion needs change or compatibility cannot be demonstrated, continued operation becomes a growing production risk rather than a lifecycle strategy.

Not as a universal rule. The scope depends on the installed architecture, exact hardware and software revisions, supported upgrade path and site requirements. Confirm compatibility with official documentation and qualified engineering review.
Healthy I/O and field wiring may continue to meet process requirements. Retention can reduce rewiring, loop checks, outage work and commissioning risk when the supported architecture permits it.
Replacement deserves priority when failure trends rise, physical condition declines, verified spares are unavailable, expansion exceeds capacity or the target architecture cannot support the installed configuration.
Provide the complete model number, hardware revision, terminal-block type, slot, signal function, redundancy arrangement, system version and clear label photographs.
No. Product availability and platform compatibility are separate questions. The responsible engineering team must approve compatibility for the specific installed system and application.
Send the exact model and revision, required quantity, and required-on-site date. AMIKON can review sourcing options for maintenance or phased modernization.
