The ICS TRIPLEX T8310C Expander Processor Module is a critical component of Rockwell Automation's Trusted® safety control system platform. Designed specifically for high-integrity process control and safety applications, this module serves as the intelligent gateway that extends the Trusted system's Inter-Module Bus (IMB) architecture beyond a single chassis, enabling scalable, fault-tolerant distributed control systems.

Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) Design

At the core of the T8310C lies a sophisticated Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) architecture implemented through Hardware Implemented Fault Tolerant (HIFT) technology . The module contains three independent Fault Containment Regions (FCRs A, B, and C), each operating in lock-step configuration to ensure continuous operation even in the presence of hardware failures.

Key architectural features include:
  • Fault Tolerant (3-2-0) Operation: The system maintains full functionality with three channels, operates with degraded performance with two channels, and safely shuts down with zero channels
  • Byzantine Voting: All data transactions undergo rigorous majority voting to detect and isolate faults
  • Fault Containment: Isolation between FCRs prevents fault propagation, localizing failures and maximizing system availability
The T8310C manages two critical communication buses:
  • Expander Bus: A triplicated, point-to-point architecture connecting to the TMR Expander Interface Module (T8311/T8312) via Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cables at 1.5 Gbps data transfer rates
    • Inter-Module Bus (IMB): Provides high-bandwidth (12.5 Msymbols/second), fault-tolerant communication within the Expander Chassis, identical to the Controller Chassis IMB
The module supports companion slot installation, allowing two T8310C modules to operate in active/standby pairs. This configuration enables:
  • Automatic failover upon fault detection
  • Hot-swappable module replacement without system shutdown
  • Manual changeover capabilities via diagnostic interfaces
The primary function involves bidirectional message forwarding between the Controller Chassis and Expander Chassis. The module:
  • Resynchronizes and majority-votes all messages between buses
  • Forwards critical control signals (Power Failure Warning, System Watchdog, Command Response Control)
  • Generates independent IMB power supplies for Interface Modules
  • Provides synchronized IMB clock generation at standard rates

T8310C Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) Application Scenarios

Large-Scale Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
In petrochemical refineries and offshore platforms, the T8310C enables distributed I/O architectures where safety-critical sensors and final control elements are geographically separated from the main controller. The module maintains TMR integrity across chassis boundaries, ensuring SIL 3 capability even with distributed architectures.

Turbomachinery Control
For gas turbine and compressor control systems requiring extensive I/O points, the T8310C allows expansion beyond single-chassis limitations while maintaining the <1ms response times necessary for anti-surge protection and emergency shutdown systems.

Subsea Production Control
In subsea oil and gas applications, the T8310C facilitates topside-to-subsea communication through fiber optic expander configurations (using T8314 Fiber Optic Tx/Rx Units), extending the Trusted system's reach to subsea control modules while maintaining onshore safety integrity levels.
