At its core, the FCM2F10 provides baseplate-to-baseplate fiber optic extension of the module Fieldbus with a maximum nominal distance of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) between any two baseplates. This is achieved using standard single-mode fiber optic cable terminated with ST-type connectors, ensuring compatibility with widely available industrial fiber infrastructure. The module supports complex network topologies where up to four baseplates can be interconnected using up to three fiber optic segments, with the total fiber cabling distance across all segments not exceeding 20 km (12.42 mi). Baseplates located within 60 meters (196.85 ft) of each other can alternatively be linked using standard shielded twisted-pair or twinax-pair cable without requiring FCM modules, offering flexibility for both local and remote I/O clustering
