Designed for the most critical controlprograms, supervised digital output(SDO) modules meet the needs ofsystems whose outputs remain in asingle state for extended periods of time(in some applications, for years). AnSDO module receives output signalsfrom the main processors on each ofthree channels. Each set of three signalsis then voted upon by a fully faulttolerant quadruplicated output switchwhose elements are power transistors,so that one voted output signal is passedto the field termination.

Each SDO module has voltage andcurrent loopback circuitry coupled withsophisticated online diagnostics thatverify the operation of each outputswitch, the field circuit and the presence of a load. This design providescomplete fault coverage without theneed to influence the output signal.

The 3624 implements Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) at the module level. Each of the three independent channels receives digital output commands from the three Tricon Main Processors over the triplicated I/O bus. The channel outputs are then voted by quadruplicated power transistor circuitry to produce a single, highly reliable output signal to the field device. This architecture ensures that a fault in any single channel—whether due to processor failure, wiring error, or power transistor degradation—cannot cause either a dangerous failure-to-energize or a spurious trip that would disrupt process operation. The quadruplicated voter provides multiple redundancy for all critical signal paths, achieving IEC 61508 SIL 3 capability for safety instrumented functions.
