Description

The ABB ZCU-14 3AXD50000005164 is an external control unit for the ACS880 series of industrial drives. It consists of an I/O board integrated into a plastic housing and serves as the primary control and communication interface for ACS880-14 single drive module packages, ACS880-307 diode supply units, and various ACS880 inverter module configurations.

The unit can be mounted directly onto the drive or inverter module, or installed separately depending on the cabinet layout. It receives 24 V DC power through the XPOW terminal block at 2 A minimum. Redundant power supply connections are supported for critical applications. The +24 V output (XD24) provides auxiliary power for external digital inputs with a total capacity of 4.8 W (200 mA), minus any current drawn by DIO1 and DIO2.

The ZCU-14 features two analog inputs (AI1, AI2) with selectable current or voltage mode via onboard jumpers, and two analog outputs (AO1, AO2) for process value feedback. Six digital inputs (DI1...DI6) and one digital interlock input (DIIL) accept 24 V logic signals, while two configurable digital input/output channels (DIO1, DIO2) provide flexibility for pulse frequency input/output applications. Three relay outputs (RO1, RO2, RO3) with NC/COM/NO contacts deliver status indication and control signals at up to 250 V AC / 30 V DC, 2 A.

Features:

  • Complete Drive Control
  • Integrated Analog and Digital I/O
  • Safety Function Support
  • Flexible Communication Expansion
The ABB ZCU-14 3AXD50000005164 Control Unit is the primary control board used in ABB ACS880 variable frequency drives. It integrates motor control, system monitoring, communication management, safety interfaces, and I/O processing into a single hardware platform. Acting as the central controller of the drive, it coordinates signal processing between the drive power section, operator interface, field devices, and industrial communication networks.

The control unit includes onboard analog and digital I/O, programmable relay outputs, a Safe Torque Off (STO) interface, drive-to-drive communication, memory unit support, and three communication option slots for expanding connectivity. An external 24 VDC power input allows the controller to remain operational during temporary mains power interruptions, supporting uninterrupted communication and faster drive recovery after power restoration.

The ZCU-14 3AXD5000000516 ABB CONTROL UNIT may still be available for purchase and support from Amikon Limited beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

The Safe Torque Off (XSTO) connection accepts −3...30 V DC signals and provides safe shutdown functionality. When controlling an inverter unit, de-energizing the STO inputs constitutes a true safety function; when controlling a supply unit, de-energizing stops the unit but does not perform a safety shutdown.
A 7-segment display on the board provides status and fault indication, with LEDs for power (PWR OK), fault (FAULT), battery status (BATT OK), and memory write activity (WRITE). The real-time clock is backed by a BR2032 battery.
All screw terminals accept wire sizes from 0.5 to 2.5 mm² (24 to 12 AWG) with a tightening torque of 0.5 N·m. The control unit fulfills PELV (Protective Extra Low Voltage) requirements and carries CE, UL, EAC, and China RoHS markings.
  • Oil & Gas: Powers heavy pumping systems (PCP, ESP), compressors, and pipeline distribution
  • Material Handling: Drives cranes, hoists, winders, and conveyors requiring starting torque and brake controls
  • Mining/Minerals: Drives crushers, mills, shredders, and ventilation fans under severe strain
  • Water/Wastewater: Runs high-capacity pumps, aeration blowers, and industrial mixers
  • Marine/Offshore: Deployed in thrusters, winches, deck machinery, and propulsion with safety certifications

Isolate Power: Switch off the main supply and wait 5 minutes for the DC bus capacitors to discharge.
Mounting: Secure the ZCU-14 onto the standard mounting slots or plate inside the drive cabinet. If mounted externally, use a compatible din-rail template or panel mounting platform.
Card Alignment: When inserting optional extension modules into Slots 1, 2, or 3, slide the module carefully along the guide rails until the plastic retaining clips snap securely into position.
Fastening: Tighten the grounding/retaining screws. Do not overtighten, to prevent damaging the board.

Technical notes

Power supply for the ABB ZCU-14 is provided through terminal block XPOW from a 24 V DC, 2 A external supply. Using an external supply with the ABB ZCU-14 is recommended if the control unit needs to be kept operational during input power breaks, for example because of continuous fieldbus communication, or if immediate restart is needed after a power break with no control unit power-up delay allowed.

FAQs

  • What is the primary purpose of the ABB ZCU-14 unit?

    +
It functions as an external drive processing and control hub, handling high-speed motor regulation, real-time thermal protection, and electrical stress supervision. It also offers integrated expansion slots for fieldbus adapters and additional I/O modules.
  • What temperature sensors are compatible with the ZCU-14?

    +
The control unit supports both PTC and Pt100 temperature sensor types. You can configure and monitor these directly through the drive's firmware manual to prevent motor overheating
  • What expansion slots are available on the ZCU-14?

    +
The unit contains three option slots (Slots 1, 2, and 3) that accommodate plug-in modules. You can insert analog/digital I/O extensions, encoder feedback interface modules, or fieldbus communication adapters. There is also a dedicated connector (X12) for mounting the FSO-xx functional safety module.
  • Does the ZCU-14 support external power?

    +
Yes. While it runs on internal drive power during operation, the board features an XPOW terminal block for an external +24 V DC power supply. An external supply keeps the control logic, communications, and diagnostics alive even when the main 3-phase AC power input is disconnected.
