Bently Nevada 3500/64M Cascade Mode: Four Pressure Readings Are Not Four Measurement Locations

Four values on a screen can represent four pressure points—or four frequency bands from one point. Trace the source before approving the spare and its channel map.

1 physical source → 4 processed views

Each channel can have its own bandpass option and full-scale range, subject to the channel-pair filtering-mode rule.

Concept only. Four channel results do not establish four sensor locations or four identical buffered outputs.

01 / What does each number represent?

Count the pressure sources before counting the readings.

A project may ask for four pressure values, yet the 3500/64M can produce four processed channel values from one transducer in Cascade Mode. Those values may represent four frequency bands at one physical location rather than four measured locations.

The manufacturer describes the 3500/64M as a four-channel dynamic pressure monitor that accepts one to four pressure transducer signals. Its 1 > ALL setting feeds only channel 1’s input to all four processing channels. The procurement question is therefore what the project requires the values to represent.

Decision before purchase: ask whether the specification requires four independent physical pressure locations or four processed views of one location.
02 / Two hypothetical requirements

The same count of values can describe different coverage.

These are illustrative requirements, not records from an installed plant. Both can result in four values on a display or in a data list, but they call for different transducer and channel evidence.

Hypothetical requirement A

Four physical locations

Location A–D → four sensor inputs → four processed values

Confirm four installed pressure sources, their channel assignments and the requested filtering and range for each. A four-value screen alone does not prove this arrangement.

Hypothetical requirement B

One location, four bands

Location A → input 1 → four processed channel values

In Cascade Mode, one source can support four separate bandpass options and full-scale ranges. Channels 1–2 and 3–4 still select filtering mode as pairs.

The manufacturer permits different bandpass selections within a pair, while requiring the channels in that pair to use the same low or high filtering mode. Obtain the approved configuration rather than inferring it from the front panel.

03 / Follow every output path

Processed values, recorder signals and buffers need separate checks.

The OEM lists a measured bandpass dynamic-pressure value for each channel and an individual 4–20 mA recorder value for each channel. It also lists one front-panel buffered transducer connector per channel. These are different points in the signal path.

Processed valueCheck which physical input supplies the processing channel, plus that channel’s approved bandpass and full-scale range.
Recorder outputCheck which processed channel the recorder signal represents, its scaling and the downstream system’s assigned tag.
Buffered outputThe datasheet explicitly says Cascade Mode does not cascade buffered transducer outputs. Do not assume front connectors 2–4 reproduce the input 1 waveform for an external analyser.

If an external analyser uses a buffered connector, its actual source must be confirmed from the installed connection and approved documentation. A recorder trend or displayed value does not establish what that analyser receives.

The linked video is supplementary visual material. Confirm Cascade settings, physical sensor sources and output routing from the approved configuration and project records.

04 / Signal-path verification

Trace each reading from sensor to output.

Use one row per required reported value. The example below shows how to capture the route from the physical point through a processed channel to downstream evidence. The identifiers and frequency bands are placeholders; replace them with approved project records.

Reported value Physical point / sensor Input → processing Band / full scale Recorder destination Buffered output evidence
PV-A Location A / sensor ID pending Input 1 → CH 1 Approved band A / scale A DCS tag and scale pending Connector 1; confirm actual cable destination
PV-B Same Location A in Cascade example Input 1 → CH 2 Approved band B / scale B DCS tag and scale pending Do not assume connector 2 duplicates input 1
PV-C Same Location A in Cascade example Input 1 → CH 3 Approved band C / scale C DCS tag and scale pending Verify analyser tap separately
PV-D Same Location A in Cascade example Input 1 → CH 4 Approved band D / scale D DCS tag and scale pending Verify analyser tap separately

Illustrative Cascade Mode matrix only. A four-location project would list four different physical points and four actual sensor inputs instead. No site mapping, values or test result is implied.

01Attach the approved point and channel map.Identify sensor locations, sensor and signal-conditioner models, front module and rear I/O labels.
02Record the saved configuration.Show whether 1 > ALL is enabled, the channel-pair filtering modes, each bandpass and full-scale range.
03Prove downstream assignments.Link recorder outputs and buffered connector destinations to DCS or analyser tags, with the responsible engineer’s acceptance record.
05 / Spare-monitor enquiry

Send the approved channel map with the model number.

Amikon lists the 3500/64M 176449-05 front monitor ↗. An enquiry should identify the installed I/O and the intended signal path so the quoted hardware scope can be compared with the engineering requirement.

Include in the enquiry

  • Readable main monitor and rear I/O nameplates, part numbers and revisions.
  • Transducer and signal-conditioning equipment models, quantities and physical locations.
  • Approved pressure-point and channel map, including the current Cascade setting.
  • Per-channel frequency bands, filtering mode and full-scale ranges.
  • Recorder and buffered-output destinations, including any external analyser.
  • Requested traceability, lead time, warranty and certification documents.

Ask for product condition, supply scope, delivery and document availability in the written quotation. The responsible project engineer must approve the final channel and output mapping against the applicable OEM instructions.

Send the details to info@amikon.cn ↗ or use the Amikon contact page ↗.

06 / Frequently asked questions

Questions before approving a replacement.

QUESTION 01

Do four 3500/64M readings prove four sensor locations?

No. In Cascade Mode, the channel 1 input can feed all four processing channels. Confirm the physical source for each reported value.

QUESTION 02

Can the four Cascade channels use different frequency bands?

The OEM says four separate bandpass options and full-scale ranges are possible from one transducer. The low or high filtering mode is selected by channel pair.

QUESTION 03

Does Cascade Mode copy input 1 to all front buffered connectors?

No. The datasheet explicitly states that buffered transducer outputs do not cascade. Verify any external analyser connection separately.

QUESTION 04

Is a 176449-05 part number enough to approve the spare?

No. Match the actual front and rear I/O labels, version, sensor arrangement, approved configuration and required output paths.

QUESTION 05

Can a 4–20 mA recorder value prove the signal on a buffered connector?

No. The recorder value and buffered transducer output are separate paths. Confirm the actual buffered connection and its source before using it for an external analyser.

QUESTION 06

What evidence should be kept after a monitor replacement?

Keep the approved sensor-to-channel map, saved Cascade and filter settings, recorder scaling, buffered-connector destinations and the responsible engineer’s acceptance record.
