Description

A pair of FBM231 modules combine to provideredundancy at the Fieldbus Module (FBM) level, withfield wiring to two termination assemblies. In this configuration, one FBM231 is theMaster, and the other is the Tracker module. Inputpoints on the control station are updated from thedevice inputs received on the network connected tothe Master. Device output points, depending on theI/O driver, are written by both the Master and Trackermodule. Role switching is automatic if actualproblems are detected bythe I/O driver, or the user can switch the roles at anytime via SMDH.

The FBM231 has four ports - each can beindividually configured in software for RS-232,RS-422 or RS-485. This allows a single FBM231the flexibility to connect to multiple similar but notidentical devices. Ports 1, 2, 3, and/or 4 can beconfigured as a single logical port with redundantcables allowing you to interface with dual-ported I/Odevices within your plant.

The Foxboro FBM231 is a Field Device System Integrator (FDSI) module that provides a serial interface between dual-ported field I/O devices and the Foxboro Evo Process Automation System. A pair of FBM231 modules combine to provide redundancy at the Fieldbus Module level, with field wiring to two termination assemblies. In this configuration, one FBM231 is the Master and the other is the Tracker module. Input points on the control station are updated from the device inputs received on the network connected to the Master, while device output points are written by both the Master and Tracker module. Role switching is automatic if actual problems are detected by the I/O driver, or the user can switch the roles at any time via software.

The FBM231 has four ports—each can be individually configured in software for RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485. This flexibility allows a single FBM231 to connect to multiple similar but not identical devices. Ports 1, 2, 3, and/or 4 of the FBM231 can be configured as a single logical port with redundant cables, allowing interfacing with dual-ported I/O devices within the plant. The FBM231 and its associated termination assemblies accommodate several types of connections to dual-ported devices, including direct connection, connection to modems when used with the RS-232 communication interface, and multidrop connections to RS-485 devices.

All prices are shown in USD.
The FBM231 is a generic hardware module in which different software drivers can be loaded. These drivers configure the FBM231 to recognize a particular protocol used by the field device. Several of the software drivers are standard product offerings, while other custom drivers can be developed to meet specific needs. These drivers are dynamically downloaded to the pair of FBM231 modules with software code specifically designed to interface with the third-party device's protocol. From the Foxboro control station to which the FBM231 is connected, up to 2000 Distributed Control Interface (DCI) data connections can be made to read or write data. The FBM231 supports analog input or output values (integer or IEEE single-precision floating point), single digital input or output values, and multiple (packed) digital input or output values packed in groups of up to 32 digital points per connection.

  • Oil/Gas/Petrochemical: Offshore platforms and refining facilities
  • Power Generation/Turbines: High-speed turbine control and protection monitoring
  • Chemical Processing: Highly corrosive chemical processing units
  • Water/Wastewater: Geographically distributed pumping and filtration subsystems

Redundancy Setup: The FBM231 utilizes a redundant pair of modules (one acts as the Master, the other as the Tracker) to ensure high availability. Both modules must be inserted into their respective slots adjacent to each other.
Mounting: The modules can be mounted on a standard DIN rail or within a 19-inch rack using the standard 200 Series subsystem mounting.
Placement: Align the module with the baseplate connectors and gently slide it in until it seats firmly. Secure the module using the built-in locking mechanism.

Technical notes

The FBM231 features a compact design with a rugged extruded aluminum exterior for physical and electrical protection of the circuits. Enclosures specially designed for mounting the FBM231 provide various levels of environmental protection, up to harsh environments per ISA Standard S71.04. The FBM231 operates in a temperature range of -20 to +70°C with relative humidity of 5 to 95% (noncondensing). The FBM231 has a mass of approximately 284 g and dimensions of 102 mm height, 45 mm width, and 104 mm depth.

FAQs

  • What is the FBM231?

    +
The Foxboro FBM231 (Part No. P0926GV) is a Field Device System Integrator (FDSI) Module designed for use with the Foxboro I/A Series and Foxboro Evo Process Automation Systems.
  • What is the function of the FBM231?

    +
It collects data from serial field devices and converts it to Distributed Control Interface (DCI) data types (such as integers, floating-point numbers, or packed inputs/outputs) to be used seamlessly by the Foxboro control station.
  • Does the FBM231 support redundancy?

    +
Yes. For critical operations, a pair of FBM231 modules works together on the baseplate. One acts as the Master and the other as the Tracker. Role switching is automatic if the I/O driver detects a problem, or it can be manually switched via SMDH.
  • Where is this module typically used?

    +
It is primarily used in harsh, industrial process control environments. Because it is rated for Class G3 (harsh) environments and holds marine certifications (ABS/Bureau Veritas), it is highly reliable for oil & gas, power plants, and marine automation
