Description

The 3201 is a Triconex CM3201 Communication Module designed as an optional communication interface for the Trident safety system. The 3201 serves as a three-to-one interface to the Main Processors (MPs), enabling the Trident controller to communicate with external host computers, distributed control systems (DCS), open networks, network printers, other Trident systems, and Tricon V9 systems.

The 3201 provides three optically isolated RS-232/485 serial ports. The 3201's serial ports are user-configurable for Modbus point-to-point or multi-point (network) connections, with transmission rates up to 115 kilobits per second per port. The 3201 supports Modbus master or Modbus slave protocol on the serial ports.

The 3201 provides two network ports for Ethernet communication. The 3201's first network port is a 10-megabit Ethernet port with two connectors: 10BaseT and Attachment Unit Interface (AUI) for a 10-megabit media access unit (MAU). The 3201's second network port is a 100-megabit Ethernet port with two connectors: 100BaseTX and Media Independent Interface (MII) for a 100-megabit MAU. MAUs may be used in place of the 10/100BaseT RJ-45 twisted-pair connections on the 3201 to convert the network ports to other Ethernet media types or to extend network reach.

The TRICONEX CM3201 Communication Module is designed to provide reliable external communication for Triconex safety and control systems. It acts as an interface between the Triconex controller and external automation equipment, supervisory systems, engineering workstations, and industrial networks.

The CM3201 supports up to three configurable RS-232 or RS-485 serial ports.These optically isolated ports can be configured for Modbus communication and support transmission speeds up to 115.2 kbps. RS-232 connections are suitable for shorter point-to-point connections, while RS-485 supports longer-distance industrial communication and multidrop networks.

The module also provides two network ports for Ethernet-based communication. Supported communication functions include TCP/IP, TSAA, TriStation, Peer-to-Peer communication, Triconex time synchronization, and other compatible network services. This allows the CM3201 to connect Triconex systems with DCS, HMI, SCADA, engineering, and plant-level communication networks.

The CM3201 supports Modbus Master and Modbus Slave communication through its serial interfaces. This allows the Triconex system to exchange process and status data with external devices such as PLCs, meters, controllers, and other industrial automation equipment. 
The module operates from a nominal 24 V DC supply with a specified operating range of 19.2 to 30 V DC, including the specified AC ripple tolerance. Logic power consumption is specified at up to 8 W without media adapter units (MAUs). 
The TRICONEX CM3201 can be used in single or redundant communication configurations. A Trident controller can support up to two communication modules on a communication module baseplate, allowing additional communication ports or redundant communication connections depending on the system configuration.
