ABB and SSAB Forge Landmark Partnership to Advance Electrification of Fossil-Free Steel Plant in Sweden
• ABB will provide comprehensive design, supply, installation and commissioning services for the main electrical infrastructure of SSAB's steel plant in Luleå.
• The scope includes electrification products and engineering services, supporting SSAB’s transition to fossil-free steel production.
• Once operational, the plant, located on Sweden’s northern coast, is projected to reduce Sweden’s total CO₂ emissions by 7%.
ABB and steel manufacturer SSAB have recently formalized a strategic collaboration, under which ABB will deliver the primary electrical infrastructure for SSAB’s new fossil-free steel plant in Luleå, Sweden. The project encompasses the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of the main power distribution system, ensuring reliable electricity supply across the new facility. This initiative marks a critical milestone in SSAB’s transition toward fossil-free steelmaking.
The new production facility will replace SSAB’s existing steel plant in Luleå and is scheduled to commence fossil-free steel production by the end of 2029. According to SSAB’s estimates, the project is expected to reduce annual CO₂ emissions by 2.8 million tons, equivalent to 90% of the current plant’s emissions. This reduction is projected to lower Sweden’s total carbon footprint by 7%.
Between 2025 and 2028, ABB will supply a range of integrated products and services to establish a robust, high-efficiency, and future-ready electrical system, laying the foundation for fossil-free steel production. The supply scope includes complete electrical design, medium- and low-voltage switchgear, distribution transformers, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, DC distribution, backup power systems, automated power control, and monitoring solutions. As the sole supplier for this contract, ABB will also oversee installation and commissioning activities.
A reliable power distribution system is central to SSAB’s transformation, as the new plant will employ energy-intensive processes such as electric arc furnace (EAF) technology. ABB engaged early in the project, conducting feasibility studies and front-end engineering design (FEED) to develop a distribution system that ensures stable grid-to-plant power delivery, meeting the facility’s upgraded energy demands. This meticulous collaboration establishes a solid foundation for phasing out coal-based steelmaking and scaling fossil-free production.
“For decades, ABB has been a key supplier to SSAB. This agreement continues our partnership, with ABB taking full responsibility for the design, supply, and commissioning of the main electrical infrastructure at SSAB’s new Luleå plant,” said Carl Orrling, Chief Technology Officer at SSAB and Head of Transformation. “ABB’s early involvement, combined with its ability to integrate global technological expertise with strong local execution, was a decisive factor. Through the adoption of new technologies, we aim to enhance cost efficiency, shorten lead times, and improve flexibility in responding to demand fluctuations. Once the existing production lines are decommissioned, our Luleå facility will achieve a substantial reduction in carbon emissions.”
