In 2025, global renewable energy development has entered a critical transformation period. According to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) latest "Renewables 2025" report, global renewable power generation capacity is expected to double during 2025-2030, adding approximately 4,600 gigawatts—equivalent to incorporating the combined power generation capacity of China, the European Union, and Japan into the global energy mix.
Solar Energy Leading Growth Wave
Solar photovoltaic technology has become the main driver of renewable energy growth, accounting for nearly 80% of global new capacity additions. From the invention of the first photovoltaic cell in 1954 to today's massive commercial installations, solar technology has undergone a remarkable transformation from laboratory to large-scale commercialization. Low production costs, fast approval processes, and broad social acceptance provide strong momentum for solar development. Around 2028, solar power is expected to surpass hydropower as the largest renewable energy source.
Steady Wind Energy Development
Global wind power installed capacity will nearly double by 2030, exceeding 2,000 gigawatts. Offshore wind development is particularly rapid, with installed capacity expected to increase by 140 GW, more than doubling the previous growth. Annual new offshore wind capacity will grow from 9.2 GW in 2024 to over 37 GW by 2030, with China accounting for nearly 50% of this increase. Cumulative onshore wind installed capacity is expected to increase by 45%, reaching 732 GW.
Technology Integration and Modernization Challenges
As renewable energy's share continues to increase, grid integration has become a key challenge. The intermittent nature of natural resources requires more advanced automation, electrification, and digital solutions. Companies like ABB play important roles in this field, with over 60,000 wind turbines worldwide relying on their components. For aging wind farms operating for 15-20 years, modernization is more cost-effective than complete replacement, extending service life by upgrading key components like converter controllers and power electronics.
Policy Environment and Market Prospects
Despite overall positive trends, the 2025 forecast has been revised down by 5% compared to 2024, mainly due to policy, regulatory, and market changes. The U.S. forecast has been revised down by nearly 50% due to the phase-out of tax credits and new foreign entity restrictions. In contrast, prospects have improved for India, Europe, and most emerging economies. China continues to lead global renewable energy development, dominating the production of solar cells (80%), wind turbines (70%), and lithium batteries (70%).
Future Outlook
By 2030, renewable energy will become the world's largest source of electricity, accounting for 45% of the power structure, a significant increase from 32% in 2024. The share of variable renewable energy (mainly solar and wind) will almost double to 28%. China is expected to contribute nearly half of global solar and wind power generation, with renewable energy accounting for 50% of China's electricity mix.
