Point-to-point serial communication for ET 200S
Siemens 6ES7138-4DF01-0AB0 is the ET 200S 1SI serial interface module for asynchronous point-to-point communication. One channel can be configured for RS232C, RS422 or RS485, with ASCII and 3964(R) driver options subject to the selected electrical interface.
The module exchanges messages with the controller through configured process data and communication function blocks. Select the physical interface and driver together. ASCII is available on RS232C, RS422 and RS485, whereas 3964(R) is limited to RS232C and RS422. Full-duplex ASCII is not available on RS485. Choose the process-data size against the installed IM 151 capability, not just the module's catalog options. The exact data sheet restricts 32-byte operation to specified Standard and High Feature interface versions. Can 3964(R) be used with RS485?
No. The original driver-function table supports 3964(R) on RS232C and RS422, but not RS485. RS485 uses the ASCII driver in half-duplex operation; the generic RS422/RS485 heading in some data sheets must not override this explicit restriction. -
Does a 32-byte interface mean the maximum message is 32 bytes?
No. The process-data configuration and complete message length are different limits. The manual transfers larger messages in segments, while the exact data sheet permits message lengths up to 224 bytes. The 32-byte configuration also depends on the installed IM 151 version. -
Can a 1200 m RS485 cable be used at 115.2 kbit/s?

Can ASCII messages be delimited without writing all framing logic in the PLC?
Yes. The driver offers receive termination by character-delay expiration, defined end characters or a fixed number of characters. The selected criterion and its timing must match the partner. Flow control also depends on the electrical interface and is not available on RS485. -
What should be checked after parameter changes or CPU restart?
New parameterization restarts the driver and discards stored send/receive messages. The startup receive-buffer setting determines whether buffered messages are cleared when the CPU returns to RUN. Restore the intended settings, wait for function-block initialization and verify message handling and diagnostic status.
