Siemens 6ES7138-4FB03-0AB0 is the ET 200S four-channel fail-safe digital output module for 24 V DC loads. Each output uses P/M switching and has a 2 A nominal rating, while the permissible module current depends on mounting orientation and ambient temperature.

Qualify the complete load circuit before enabling the outputs
Each FB03 channel switches both the positive and return sides of a suitable 24 V load. This P/M arrangement must be retained in the circuit design; an external ground connection can bypass the return switch and produce a fault. Check the actual load resistance and current, and distinguish a direct load connection from an interface-relay circuit with different residual-current considerations.
Calculate simultaneous current at the installed orientation and temperature, not simply four times the 2 A channel rating. Horizontal operation allows 6 A only within its stated temperature range, with lower totals at higher temperatures; vertical operation has a separate 4 A limit. Do not parallel output channels to obtain additional capacity, and verify the switching-frequency limit for the particular load type.
Coordinate readback timing with load capacitance, test pulses and the required safety response. Too short a setting can passivate a channel that has not discharged, but extending it can affect fault detection and introduces the documented interference restriction. Retain process feedback where the selected circuit requires it, and validate the complete PROFIsafe output path instead of treating normal LED indications as safety proof.

Can all four outputs deliver 2 A at the same time?
Not without regard to the module total. Siemens limits the combined current to 6 A for horizontal installation up to 40 C, then 5 A up to 55 C and 4 A up to 60 C. Vertical installation is limited to 4 A up to 40 C. Budget the simultaneous loads against these limits. -
Can two output channels be paralleled for more current?
No. The datasheet prohibits paralleling separate outputs for increased current or redundant load control. This is different from the manual example where two suitable loads are connected to a single P/M output; that example has its own wiring, feedback and diagnostic restrictions. -
Why does a grounded load produce a short-circuit indication?
A load-side chassis connection can bypass the M-switch when chassis and supply ground are linked. The module can therefore detect a short circuit even if the load seems to operate. Review the original grounding arrangement and load suitability rather than bridging a switching path or disabling the safety diagnostics. -
May the readback time simply be increased to remove a fault?
No. More time may be needed for a capacitive load to discharge, but it also changes the fault-detection behavior. The manual warns of a specific interference limitation at settings of 50 ms or longer. Evaluate the actual load, interference environment and safety response before changing the maintained configuration. -
Is the FB03 M-switch residual current identical to FB04?
No. For the documented interface-relay arrangement, the FB03 permits up to 4 mA at the M-switch. The 2013 manual specifically describes a reduced M-channel residual current as a feature of the newer FB04. Do not import that successor value when checking an FB03 load. -
Can an FB03 be removed with load voltage applied?
The original hot-swap table requires the load voltage to be switched off for fail-safe output-module insertion or removal. Preserve the configured PROFIsafe address. The resulting communication error must be handled and acknowledged in the safety program, followed by fault correction and safety-function validation before normal operation. -
Are the status LEDs sufficient to validate a repaired output?
No. Siemens explicitly states that SF and output-status displays are not designed for safety-related evaluation. Correct the fault, check the actual switching and feedback path, revalidate the safety function and record the repair. A cleared LED alone does not prove the required safe response.
