The WOODWARD 8280-192 is a 701A Digital Speed Control specifically for controlling the speed of reciprocating engines in mechanical drive or generator set service. The 8280-192 consists of a single printed circuit board housed in a sheetmetal chassis, with connections provided via two terminal strips and a 9-pin subminiature D connector, delivering a compact and reliable control solution for engine prime mover systems.

It incorporates a special tracking filter in the speed sensing circuitry, specifically designed for reciprocating engines. The control features dual selectable dynamics. Two independent sets of dynamic parameters can be configured and switched via an external contact input. This is useful for engine systems with different operating conditions, such as open or closed clutches, pilot-fuel engines, or utility tie breaker status changes.
The 0–200 mA actuator output drives pneumatic, electric, or electrohydraulic actuators. The actuator sense (forward or reverse acting) is software selectable. Fuel limiting functions include maximum fuel limit, start fuel limit, idle fuel limit, and torque limiters with configurable breakpoints. A start speed setting allows the start fuel limit to be deactivated once the engine reaches a defined speed.
All adjustments are made using the Woodward 9907-205 Hand Held Programmer, which communicates via the RS-422 serial port (9-pin D connector, 1200 baud full duplex). The programmer displays two parameters simultaneously and updates continuously. After setpoints are adjusted, the control saves them permanently in nonvolatile memory that does not require batteries.
