Description

The Triconex 8311 is a 24 VDC – 175-Watt Power Module designed for Triconex Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), providing reliable DC power conversion for all modules within the Tricon chassis. The 8311 converts 24V DC line power to 6.5 VDC ±1% output voltage at 27A maximum current, delivering 175 watts of output power at 60°C ambient temperature to support the full load of Tricon control modules.

Each Tricon chassis is equipped with two 8311 power modules, providing dual redundancy for enhanced system availability. Either 8311 module is fully capable of running the entire Tricon system at full load and rated temperature independently. Each 8311 module can be replaced online without shutting down the system, minimizing downtime during maintenance operations. The 8311 modules are located on the left side of the chassis, with terminal strips for system grounding, incoming power, and hardwired alarms located at the lower left corner of the backplane.

Each Tricon chassis is equipped withtwo power modules—either one is fullycapable of running the Tricon at fullload and rated temperature. Each powermodule can be replaced online. Thepower modules, located on the left sideof the chassis, convert line power to DCpower appropriate for all Triconmodules. Power distribution follows the Tricon TMR architecture. The 8311 provides three independent +5 VDC output buses, each rated at 10 A maximum, dedicated to powering one of the three Main Processors (MPs). This physical separation is fundamental to TMR integrity: a short circuit, overvoltage, or ground fault on one +5 VDC bus cannot affect the other two processors, ensuring that no single power supply failure can compromise the 2-out-of-3 voting logic. Additionally, the module delivers two independent +24 VDC output buses for I/O module power, each rated at 6 A maximum. These I/O power buses energize the logic circuitry of digital input modules, digital output modules, and analog I/O modules, with redundant paths ensuring continuous I/O scanning even during power module maintenance.
