During IGBT turn-off, energy stored in stray inductance of the power circuit generates voltage spikes that can exceed the IGBT breakdown voltage. The snubber circuit absorbs this energy, limiting both the rate of voltage rise (dv/dt) and the peak voltage magnitude to safe levels below the IGBT maximum rating.
