Description

The CMC 16 Condition Monitoring Card is the centralelement in Vibro-Meter’s VM600 series ConditionMonitoring System (CMS).

This intelligent front-end Data Acquisition Unit (DAU)is used in conjunction with the VM600 CMS softwareto acquire, analyse and transmit results to a hostcomputer via the VM600 series CPU M module withEthernet controller or directly via serial links.

The inputs are fully programmable and can acceptsignals representing speed, phase reference, vibration (acceleration, velocity or displacement),dynamic pressure, airgap rotor and pole profile, anydynamic signals or any quasi-static signals. Signalscan be input from adjacent Machinery ProtectionCards (MPC 4) via the VM600 ‘Raw Bus’ and ‘TachoBus’ or externally via the screw terminal connectorson the IOC 16T. The IOC 16T modules also affordsignal conditioning and EMC protection and allowinputs to be routed to the CMC 16, which includes 16programmable tracked anti-aliasing filters, andAnalog-to-Digital Converters (ADC). On-boardprocessors handle all control of acquisition, conversion from time domain to frequency domain(Fast Fourier Transform), band extraction, unitconversion, limit checking, and communication withthe host system.

The CMC16 is the central data acquisition element of the VM600 Condition Monitoring System (CMS). The CMC16 acquires, analyzes, and transmits machinery condition data to a host computer through the VM600 CPU module or serial communication links. The card operates together with the IOC16T Input/Output Card, forming a condition monitoring card pair within the VM600 rack architecture.

The CMC16 provides 16 independently configurable dynamic measurement channels. The first four channels can be configured as tachometer or phase reference inputs, while the remaining twelve channels can also be configured for process variable measurements. Each channel includes an independent 14-bit analog-to-digital converter with 16 programmable anti-aliasing filters, supporting a maximum sampling rate of 51.2 kHz and measurement bandwidths up to 20 kHz.

The VM600 CMC16 200-530-022-014 VIBRO METER Condition Monitoring Card may still be available for purchase and support from Amikon Limited beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

The 10 available outputs per channel can includeRMS, peak, peak-peak, true peak, true peak-peakvalues, Gap, Smax, or any configurable band basedupon synchronous or asynchronously acquiredspectra. Acceleration (g), velocity (in/sec, mm/sec)and displacement (mil, micron) signals are catered forand can be converted for display to any standard. Ifconfigured, data is sent to the host computer only onexception, for example, only if the change of valueexceeds a pre-defined threshold. Values can also beaveraged for smoothing or noise reduction.Events are generated when values exceed one of the6 configurable limits, exceed rate-of-change alarms ordeviate from stored baselines. However, adaptivemonitoring techniques can also be employed todynamically adjust alarm set points based uponmachine parameters such as speed and load.
  • Power Generation: Monitors large turbine generators in steam, gas, and hydroelectric plants
  • Oil and Gas: Monitors pumps, compressors, and drivers across upstream, midstream, and downstream facilities
  • Petrochemical/Refining: Installed in critical processing units to prevent production halts from machinery failure
  • Heavy Manufacturing: Applied on large-scale rotating equipment, blowers, and industrial compressors

Locate the Slot: Choose an available dual-slot segment in the VM600 rack. The front slot houses the CMC16 processing card, while the aligned rear slot houses its matching IOC16T/XIO16T card.
Align and Insert: Slide the CMC16 into the front-panel guide rails. Push firmly until the backplane connectors seat completely into the rack housing.
Secure the Module: Tighten the two front-panel retaining screws to ground the module and prevent vibration dislodgement.
Rear Panel Installation: Mirror this process on the exact same slot position from the back of the rack to insert and secure the associated I/O card.

Technical notes

The CMC16 supports both synchronous order-tracking acquisition and asynchronous fixed-frequency acquisition. Order tracking operates from 15 RPM to 30,000 RPM, while FFT processing supports resolutions of 400, 800, 1600, and 3200 lines depending on the acquisition mode. The card also supports waveform capture, time-domain averaging, spectrum averaging, orbit acquisition, and scheduled or alarm-triggered data collection for machinery condition analysis.

FAQs

  • What is the primary role of the CMC16 card?

    +
It acts as an intelligent data acquisition and condition monitoring unit (DAU). It processes vibration, speed, and dynamic pressure signals to evaluate machine health.
  • Does the CMC16 handle machinery protection or condition monitoring?

    +
It focuses primarily on condition monitoring and advanced diagnostics. It works alongside dedicated machinery protection cards (like the MPC4) within the VM600 ecosystem.
  • How many channels does the CMC16 manage?

    +
It tracks 16 programmable dynamic channels. It also handles up to 4 tachometer (speed) channels for phase reference.
  • What system software works with VM600 CMS modules?

    +
Legacy setups use VM600 software packages (MPS1/MPS2), while modern or upgraded frameworks integrate with VibroSight software.
