Keep sensor, reference temperature and diagnostics coordinated
Configure each active channel for its thermocouple characteristic or the documented ±80 mV voltage mode. The module occupies four input bytes and linearizes the nine listed thermocouple types. Use the listed terminal module, correct polarity and suitable extension conductors. Identification and maintenance functions require one of the interface versions identified in the manufacturer's compatibility table.
External compensation is part of the complete measurement chain. A compensating box must use the specified reference temperature and supply conditions; an RTD reference requires matched TC, interface and RTD parameters. Keep the reference sensor in good thermal contact with the actual junction and include its sensor and input errors when evaluating the overall temperature measurement.
Select interference-frequency suppression, active channels and smoothing for the required response. Basic conversion takes 55 or 65 ms per channel, with additional time for wire-break checking. Enable both group diagnostics and wire-break checking when a defined open-circuit indication is needed in thermocouple mode. Voltage mode must not use the thermocouple-only wire-break parameter.

Confirm both complete order numbers and the terminal-module type, then retain the thermocouple characteristic and compensation method. Do not extend that documented relationship to a different TC module simply because its housing or name is similar.
Preserve the reference-junction assignment together with the TC channel settings. A shared RTD reference must point to the intended slot and permitted channel and must track the physical junction temperature. For a compensating box, retain the specified reference and isolated, filtered supply. Changing only the electronic module does not correct an incorrect compensation arrangement.
Have qualified personnel follow the applicable ET 200S station procedure and check polarity, MANA, shielding and unused-channel jumpers before commissioning. Evaluate SF and diagnostic information, then test a known signal under the correct compensation conditions. Verify the configured conversion and smoothing response, and do not interpret an inactive-channel or diagnostic code as a valid temperature.

Does it measure its own cold-junction temperature?
