The probe tip is constructed from polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) using a patented TipLoc molding method that provides a robust bond between the probe tip and the probe body. The probe case is made from AISI 304 stainless steel. The connector is gold-plated brass or gold-plated beryllium copper. The cable is a 75 Ω triaxial design with FEP insulation.

The probe operates from a –17.5 Vdc to –26 Vdc power supply with a maximum current consumption of 12 mA. The recommended supply voltage is –24 Vdc. The system incremental scale factor is 7.87 V/mm (200 mV/mil) with a linear range of 0.25 mm to 2.3 mm (10 to 90 mils). The recommended gap setting is 1.27 mm (50 mils) from an AISI 4140 steel target. Frequency response is 0 Hz to 10 kHz (+0, –3 dB).

The 5mm probe uses smaller physical packaging than the 3300 XL 8mm probe but provides the same linear range. It does not reduce sideview clearances or tip-to-tip spacing requirements compared to an XL 8mm probe. The 5mm probe is used when physical (not electrical) constraints preclude the use of an 8mm probe, such as mounting between thrust bearing pads or other constrained spaces.
The probe is designed to seal differential pressure between the probe tip and case using a fluorocarbon O-ring. Exposing the probe to temperatures below –34 °C may cause premature failure of the pressure seal. The probe withstands tensile forces of 222 N (50 lbf) at critical connection points. The minimum cable bend radius is 25.4 mm (1.0 in).
