Triconex Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR)

Key Architectural Components

The Triconex TMR architecture eliminates single points of failure, with over one billion failure-free hours. It uses triple main processors like the 3008 module (three 50 MHz MPC860 CPUs, 16MB DRAM) executing lockstep control with per-scan voting. Triple I/O modules like AI2361 and 3601T use 2oo3 voting on A/D converters; outputs use quadruplicated voting to tolerate two faults. Redundant power supplies (8310/8311/8312) deliver 6.5 VDC. TriBus synchronizes channels and auto-isolates faulty ones.

What Is Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR)

Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) is a fault-tolerant architecture where three independent channels execute identical logic simultaneously, each with its own processor, power supply, and I/O. A majority voter applies a 2oo3 (two-out-of-three) voting mechanism: outputs are compared in real time, and at least two matching results determine the final command. If one channel fails due to hardware faults, EMI, or software errors, the other two correct channels outvote the faulty one. This fault masking enables continuous correct operation and zero-downtime fault tolerance.
